Dnd pitfall trap5/6/2023 ![]() The thief examines the trap and the DM rolls to "Find Trap". NOWHERE in B/X or BECMI does it say that a failed roll activates the trap.Įxample: The party finds an unattended chest in a dungeon room. But a light source (which creates shadows) foils infravision and allows the thief to hide in the shadows.Īlso remember: Failing the Remove Trap does not necessarily spring the trap. Note that they can't hide in shadows in total darkness against a creature with infravision. But the thief can actually Hide in Shadows - hide in plain sight, as long as their are shadows. Anyone can hide - assuming there is something to hide IN or BEHIND. Hide in Shadows is something totally different. There is a B or X module that actually codified using surprise for stealth.īy my interpretation, Thieves can roll first to see if they move SILENTLY (ie: no detection possible), then if they fail, they get the normal 2 in 6 chance to surprise (again, modified by armor). Personally, I'd houserule that halflings and those in leather armor or less get a +1 to the surprise roll (3 in 6 chance), while those in plate armor or encumbered get a -1 (1 in 6 chance). The DM makes a surprise roll for whomever is being snuck up on (2 in 6 chance). I also allow the thief character to be far less specific in what they’re searching for with the thief skill.īy the way, the same logic should be used with regard to the thief’s Hide in Shadows and Move Silently skills in relation to the surprise roll. ![]() Now, I give thieves their find traps roll in addition to the standard 1 in 6. So I’ve seen some DM’s give thieves the 1 in 6 to find until his percentage surpasses that at 3rd level. I think it’s also instructive that originally in OD&D, the skill was just “remove traps” with the “find” added later. ![]() Therefore, the thief ability to find traps must be something over and above the other characters’ abilities.Īs Thror says, there is some language limiting the general character find traps ability to a smaller subset of traps, and I’ve seen some DMs do that. It can’t possibly be the intention of the editors that 1st and 2nd level thieves find traps at a lower percentage than other (non-dwarf) character types.
